Adelaide Atomey aged 12, Bishop Challoner Collegiate School

A girl taking part in the Sky Sport Living for Sports programme

An account from lead teacher Miss Sangster

The students were chosen as they were identified as being unfit as their fitness test scores were very low and they were not fully engaged in their PE lessons. As the girls were not very motivated by one sport we chose a range of activities including kick boxing, judo and gym work.

The activities were chosen because they were different and were completely new to the students. These sessions were combined with theory sessions which covered healthy living topics. Adelaide was initially a student I was concerned about as she was not very confident and didn’t seem very motivated by the original idea.

Only when she was interviewed by teacher’s TV and Sky Sports at a recent master class did I realise how much she had actually enjoyed the project and how much she had achieved. Adelaide has definitely become more confident and more interested in her PE lessons and is getting more involved in physical activity. Many of the students improved their fitness, lost weight and all had significantly increased their confidence.

Adelaide Atomey said, "I enjoyed taking part in new sports I wouldn’t have dreamed of taking part in before and I had fun with new friends. We supported each other when we were scared. I enjoy school more now, I’m trying try different clubs and I now do cycling after school."
