How we capture News at Sky
Sky News is the Channel of Breaking News - but how do you handle a breaking news story?
This video will give you a good idea. It shows you what happened when an earthquake shook large parts of England. It was the biggest earthquake in Britain for 25 years.
It happened overnight, in the early hours of an otherwise very quiet morning. The video shows how the News Editor, TV, Online and Radio Producers at Sky News reacted to cover the story, and what the nearest correspondent and TV crews had to do. It wasn’t just a TV story: it was covered at the same time on radio and the website. Sky News is a ’multi-media’ or ’multi-platform’ operation.
The video shows the importance of reacting quickly, thinking fast, checking the story, and gathering as much information from as many different people as possible - by telephone at first and then live and on videotape. Notice how important it was to collect pictures and video from members of the public; that’s what’s known as ’user generated content’/
Also notice how the story quickly became less important when it was overtaken by another news event. That’s the nature of news.
