My name is Paddy Gilfeather, I am 28 and I am Assistant Producer at Sky Sports.
In the team I am in here we cover darts, snooker, pool, speedway and super bikes.
I have always been a big sports fan; I have played many different sports so obviously working in live sports is great. I started at Sky five years ago as a runner and I was literally making cups of tea and coffee and doing photocopying, and you learn by looking and watching people and asking questions about why they do what they are doing. You do not have to be good at sports at all, you do not have play any sport, you can be creative, technologically minded, interested in cameras and lighting, and kind of artistic and come in with new ideas.
We get to travel with some of our work. We were in Poland recently at a speedway Grand Prix and we were just about to go on air and, with about two minutes and a half to go, we lost everything, we lost all power - literally everything went black, then all the power came back with about thirty seconds to go. That could have been an absolute disaster, but when there is nothing you can do you have to sit back and remain calm, because a lot of the job you do is about making decisions and you have to have a plan or contingency plan.
The best thing about working at Sky is working in an environment where there are lots of young people and fun people; you have to be quick witted, you have to make decisions quickly. Things can go wrong, but it's how you make things right. I enjoy the fact that it is live television and anything can happen and you have to be prepared for any eventuality.
