What was it all about?
World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
Sky wanted to inspire our customers to take action through World Environment Day 2009 with a week of special green programming.

We went to extremes in Expedition Antarctica where forty-five scientists and crew voyage into this most hostile and unknown environment, where they conduct exhaustive science work and make remarkable discoveries.
Scientists tried to forecast the future consequences of the big melt and race against the clock to forecast the global consequences in Extreme Ice.
Stunning archival footage combined with the scientific breakthroughs of 2008 form the core of Earth Report 2009, our window into the front lines of science.
In addition to Expedition Antarctica, eco warriors Dick Strawbridge and Jem Stansfield used ingenuity, resourcefulness and humour to confront eco challenges head on in Planet Mechanics. And finally, whilst politicians argue about the best way to save the planet, Richard and Jonny set up house together to investigate the hard-nosed realities of living the green life in I Didn’t Know That: Green Special.
