Helping Customers Reduce Energy Bills

In 2006, Sky launched the world’s first auto-standby for set top boxes, downloading it to four million boxes.  By switching inactive boxes to standby overnight, Sky’s Auto Standby helps customers reduce their carbon footprint and save money on their energy bills.

To extend the reach and impact of Auto Standby, Sky is now:

  • Upgrading the software so that it switches inactive boxes to standby during the day as well as overnight
  • Downloading the new 24/7 Auto Standby to every box with an active subscription in all nine million Sky customer homes.

When the upgrade is complete in July 2009, 24/7 SAS is expected to save customers an estimated total each year of £20m on their energy bills² and 90,000 tonnes of CO2 – almost twice Sky’s footprint – around 30% more than the previous version of SAS.

Sky is also cutting the energy use of new satellite dishes by around 10%³.  Working in partnership with Sharp, Sky will install hundreds of thousands of these next-generation dishes in 2009.

By May 2010, every new dish Sky installs will deliver the same low energy benefits, saving customers an annual estimated £3m² on their energy bills and 12,500 tonnes of carbon.

Say ‘no' to plastic bags. Take reusable shopping bags with you to the supermarket and try to buy products with less packaging.
