Sky’s environment targets
At Sky we’re committed to reducing our impact on the environment and so this year we have set ourselves new challenging targets. Our environment strategy drives operational improvements, is integral to our product development process, inspires actions by Sky people and customers, and involves our partners and supply chain.
We’ve made good progress so far - we’ve reduced our net greenhouse gas emissions from our operations by 12% since 2003, at a time when our business has grown substantially.
We have also introduced auto-standby to reduce the energy used in our set top boxes which has helped customers save approximately 90,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.

But there’s a lot more we want to do, and in October 2008 we created a high-level Environment Steering Group (ESG) to lead our activity on screen and behind the scenes.
This group, chaired by our Chief Executive Jeremy Darroch, meets regularly to set challenging targets and drive progress against them. ESG membership comprises the senior managers across the business whose actions have the potential to achieve the maximum carbon reductions either by direct action or by inspiring our customers to take action themselves.
As a result of the ESG’s work, we have set 10 new stretching targets to cover each of our key environmental impacts:
• Carbon efficiency
• Energy efficiency of our buildings
• Use of on-site renewable energy
• Emissions from our van fleet
• Business travel
• Power consumption of our set top boxes
• Recycled waste
• Waste diverted from landfill
• Water consumption
• Indirect impacts of our supply chain
