Get kids involved
Appetite for Action has been developed in consultation with teachers to provide schools with what they need for the whole school to become involved. The Appetite for Action is for primary schools in the UK and Ireland and gives teachers access to a free, website including online resources, activities and materials to use with their pupils.
The children learn about food and the small changes needed for their schools to make a big difference to the environment. And there’s no extra work for teachers because it’s all linked to the curriculum. They will explore sustainable food issues through step-by-step guides around the topics of Greener Grub, Reduce Rubbish and Get Growing.
All schools that complete the challenge will be entered into a competition, with the opportunity to win cash prizes and the unique chance to become a Sky News studio for the day.
It’s free, it’s fun and it’s good for the planet.

Trewin: Appetite for Action is a programme that is about helping children make the connection between the food they eat and the food they throw away
Group of Kids: Over one million sausages are thrown away every day.
Trewin: Half of the waste thrown away by a primary school is actually food waste
Kid 1: 5.1 million potatoes are chucked away every single day.
Trewin: The children are going to look at the food they’re throwing away, they’re going to look at the packaging associated with that food and see how they can reduce that and they’re also going to look at things like growing their own food and understanding where food comes from.
Kid 2: I grow tomatoes
Kid 3: Potatoes
Kid 4: Carrots
Kid 5: We’re going to grow them then we’re going to sell them
Trewin: Global Action Plan and Sky’s programme will give kids lots of resources, there’s masses of lesson plans for teachers, so they can link the learning to the national curriculum. They’ll be able to do stuff at home, get their parents involved and overall make a really big difference.
Trewin: There are also prizes available for the schools that do the best. The winning school will get a £3000 cash prize and they’ll also get the delights of the Sky News team coming in to film what they’re doing in the school.
