Frequently Asked Questions

What are the business benefits of taking a lead on reducing emissions within the media sector?

Consumers are becoming more aware of environmental issues and more concerned about them. We want to respond to their concerns. As we reach one-third of UK homes, we hope to lead by example and find ways to help families become smarter about energy.

What is News Corporation doing?

In November 2006, News Corp launched a new climate change programme named ‘Cool Change'. It has three goals:

  • To significantly reduce carbon emissions of all its businesses
  • To involve its employees
  • To reach millions of readers, viewers, and web users around the world.

Achieving carbon neutrality (for the whole of News Corp) by 2010 will be an important milestone, but the long-term goal is to integrate environmental decision-making into all aspects of News Corp's work and to have a real impact on climate change.

You are actively encouraging your customers to switch to HD - but don't HD products use more energy and therefore create more carbon dioxide emissions?

Like all businesses, we're continually improving the products and services we offer our customers. We're always developing our technology and looking at ways to reduce energy use.

So we've signed up to the voluntary European Commission Code of Conduct on Energy Efficiency in Digital TV Services. This means that all our products are below the emission levels recommended by the code.
