Sky's employees are key to the success of our environmental initiatives. Our employees are taking part in activities to raise awareness of climate change, and to be more environmentally friendly both at work and at home.
Carbon credit card
In June 2006 we launched our carbon credit card. Sky people earn credits for environmental activities, which can then be redeemed for rewards. In its first year alone over 270,000 credits were earned by employees.
Getting to work
We encourage employees to think about how they can travel to work in the most environmentally friendly way.
This year, we have begun implementing our transport plan that aims to cut the number of cars coming to our Osterley site by 600 cars by 2015.
We’ve also launched an intranet site dedicated to travel. It includes a lift-sharing programme, improved shuttle buses to and from the train stations, and priority parking bays for car-sharers. In 2008, we further increased the number of spaces available for car shares in both our Osterley and Scotland sites, due to the success of our lift-sharing programme.
As part of National Bike Week, we ran Bike to Work Week, with additional showers and towels, extra cycle parking, free breakfasts and free massages provided for cyclists. During bike week 700 cycle trips were made, an increase of approximately 55% on a normal week.
Hybrid car incentive
We offer incentives to help employees reduce their carbon footprints - this includes a discount and £1,300 in cash for buying a hybrid car. So far, 25 people have bought a hybrid car through the scheme.
Carbon offsetting by employees
Our benefits package offers a plan for employees to offset all or part of their carbon footprint from their pre-tax earnings. The initiative, Choose The Bigger Picture, is run in partnership with the charity PURE and is verified by government standards.
