Earth Day 2009

What’s it all about?

On this day in 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets and parks to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Since then, countries all over the world celebrate April 22nd as a day to recognise and heighten awareness of issues relating to climate change. The Earth Day Network was founded by the organisers of the first Earth Day and gives more information on partners and activities taking place. Visit: www.earthday.net (opens in a new window)

To celebrate Earth Day 2009, Sky put on a range of activities and programmes in conjunction with National Geographic. To see the range of programmes from Inside Ultimate Earth, and Arctic Tale through to Evan Almighty and The Simpsons, visit: www.earthdaycounts.co.uk (opens in a new window)

The Bigger Picture is all about small actions that lead to big benefits and we encouraged people to join in by asking everyone to:

• Walk, cycle or take public transport instead of driving
• Make sure you recycle everything you can
• Use less water - like turning the tap off when cleaning your teeth
• Reduce your energy use - turn computers and lights off

To help everyone do those things we had a number of special offers, competitions and events taking place around Earth Day. One example was the change to win a fabulous limited-edition designer Wattson energy monitor.

We will be celebrating Earth Day 2010 so watch this space for details of what we are planning.
