What’s it all about?

World Environment Day - June 5th World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

Sky Celebration of World Environment Day
Sky is the UK’s leading entertainment company, and became the world’s first Carbon Neutral media company in 2006. Sky reach around 21 million viewers in 9.3 million households and look to inspire their customers to live more sustainable lives.

Sky began a 3 year charity partnership with Global Action Plan in 2008, to raise over £1 million for environmental projects, and use their resources and experience to engage even more customers, staff and the wider community to make positive changes to address climate change.

Their first major project together is Appetitie for Action a national primary schools programme that helps children understand the connection between the environment, what they eat and what they throw away.

To celebrate World Environment Day, Sky is planning a range of activities and programmes in conjunction with Sky Arts, Sky Movies and National Geographic.

Take Action on World Environment Day
Did you know that if everyone in the UK gave up meat for one day a week it would save more carbon than 5 million cars? Or if you switched off your PC overnight it would save enough energy for 6 microwave meals?
