We are joining forces with WWF and our customers to help save 1 billion trees in Amazon rainforest of Acre, Brazil.

What’s the aim of Sky Rainforest Rescue?

Sky has joined forces with WWF in a bid to help save 1 billion trees in the Amazon. Sky Rainforest Rescue’s ultimate goal is to preserve about 3 million hectares from deforestation - an area roughly the size of Belgium.

Every minute, an area larger than 3 football pitches of Amazon forest is lost. Sky Rainforest Rescue will tackle deforestation on a truly ambitious scale. We hope it will become a role model for other areas of the Amazon, as well as other rainforests around the world.

WWF, Sky and the Acre state government aim to reduce Acre’s current levels of deforestation. Sky Rainforest Rescue will help do this through working with local communities and improving enforcement to prevent illegal logging. The location of this project, guarding the heart of the Amazon, means it can also act as a buffer against further deforestation.

Why does the Rainforest need protecting?

The world’s tropical rainforests play a major role in slowing global warming by absorbing harmful greenhouse gases and storing it in the trees and soil. According to the UN, in just one year an average tree inhales 12kg of carbon dioxide.

Once a tree is cut down and burnt or left to rot, its stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere. This strikes a double blow for global warming, as the very trees that once helped absorb greenhouse gases now release them.

Deforestation is responsible for around a fifth of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions - that’s more than all of the world’s cars, planes, trains and ships put together. Tackling this must play an important part in how we fight global warming.

Join in by donating to help save the Rainforest

Your donation can help Sky Rainforest Rescue save a billion trees in the Amazon, along with endangered plants and animals. By reducing deforestation, it will also help in the fight against climate change. Just £20 could help save 1,000 trees. £100 could save 5000 trees.

But this is not just about your money. Sky has pledged to match every donation you make, pound for pound, up to a joint target of £4million. That equates to a lot of trees.

The Prince’s Rainforest Project

The Prince’s Rainforest Project (PRP) was set up by HRH The Prince of Wales and seeks to make rainforests worth more alive than dead. The PRP works with governments, businesses and non-profit organisations to find solutions to deforestation. At Sky we share the aims of the PRP and Jeremy Darroch, our Chief Executive, is a member of the PRP Steering Group.
