Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Sky giving this type of advice?

Sky is in one in three homes across the UK so we talk to a lot of people. We value being in a great position to help people make a difference. There are so many small things we can all do to make our world a better place to live in. This is what The Bigger Picture is all about: opportunities at home and at work to make a better future for ourselves and for everyone.

As a business, we're sure we can do a lot to reduce our impact on the environment. We've already made a heap of changes to try to use energy more efficiently. In May 2006 we became the first carbon neutral media company in the world, and we're still just as committed to doing our bit.

We also believe that we can help our customers to make things better.

Where did you get the energy saving information from?

The information in the ‘Recommended Activities’ section comes from a variety of sources including:

’The Rough Guide to Saving Energy and Reducing your Carbon Footprint (opens in a new window)’.

DEFRA (opens in a new window)- the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs

The Energy Saving Trust (opens in a new window)

Why should I change my behaviour when others don't?

By taking a lead you may inspire others to join and reducing the amount of CO2 we all emit will help to create a healthier environment and if others join us we can make a huge difference.

Is it more expensive to be green?

There are some initial costs, like upgrading your boiler, improving your insulation or changing to a renewable energy source. But in the long term, the savings will be much greater than these initial costs.

It's worth remembering there are also a number of grants and subsidies available from the government, energy suppliers and local authorities for certain products, such as insulation. These will help to reduce costs.

For information on grants and funding for energy saving products, visit The Energy Saving Trust's website

Isn't it really difficult to be green?

Being green is about changing habits, and some habits are hard to change but you can bring the whole family together and make it fun and interesting.

There's lots of information on the most effective changes you can make to lessen your impact on the environment. Visit any one of the organisations we've listed on this website for more information on climate change and what you can do.

I don't have time to make the changes, so what can I do?

Climate change is a problem that will not go away - it needs action now. Many of the things you can do involve minor changes in your lifestyle. Do what you can now, and more gradually you can then plan those changes that will need a bit more time.

I want advice specifically for my house and my lifestyle. Where can I get this?
