Support from Sky
Sky Arts is the exclusive Broadcast Sponsor of the Guardian Hay Festival bringing the magic of the festival to you at home. From a specially built studio onsite last year we broadcast the best of the festival with a daily programme ‘Hay-on Sky’ presented by Mariella Frostrup. Plus 6 episodes of the irreverant quiz show, ‘What the Dickens?’ hosted by Sandi Toksvig, where we tested our guests to see if they knew their Michaelangelo’s from their McEwan’s. To find out more about our programming from Hay, see ‘Partnership benefits’.
In addition to broadcasting we also bring a range of exclusive initiatives and activities to Hay. The following are just some of the things that Sky brought to Hay 2009:
Sky Arts Interactive Word Installation
Sky Arts commissioned contemporary artist Sam Winston to create an interactive sculpture of words for Sky Arts visitors to The Guardian Hay Festival 09. We asked visitors for their favourite words (real or made up), what the words made them feel and why.
Sam Winston then created works of art from the words, creating a reflection of the voices at Hay. Sam creates sculpture, drawings and books that question our understanding of words.
To help guests with their contributions, inspiration was provided through word games, music and sound stations. Over 8,000 visitors to the area shared words that were important to them.
Sustainable Hay
We are committed to minimising our impacts on the environment and inspiring action on climate change. We worked with Hay around sustainability, which included providing a dedicated Sky Shuttle Bus between the festival site and the surrounding villages throughout the festival, encouraging visitors to leave their cars at home. Day tickets cost £2, all of which was donated to our charity partner Global Action Plan.
Global Action Plan’s Driving Stimulator
Did you know that inflating your tyres to the correct pressure will save 5% on your fuel bill?
Our Charity Partner, Global Action Plan brought their driving simulator to Hay to show people how to drive more efficiently to reduce their impact on the environment and save money.
