Support from Sky
Sky Arts is the exclusive Broadcast Sponsor of the Guardian Hay Festival bringing the magic of the festival to you at home. From a specially built studio onsite we broadcast the best of the festival with a daily programme ‘Hay-on Sky’ presented by Mariella Frostrup. Plus 6 episodes of the irreverant quiz show, ‘What the Dickens?’ hosted by Sandi Toksvig, where we test our guests to see if they know their Michaelangelo’s from their McEwan’s. To find out more about our programming from Hay, see ‘Partnership benefits’.
In addition to broadcasting we also bring a range of exclusive initiatives and activities to Hay. The following are just some of the things that Sky brought to this year’s festival:
Sky Arts Interactive Word Installation
Sky Arts commissioned contemporary artist Sam Winston to create an interactive sculpture of words for Sky Arts visitors to The Guardian Hay Festival 2009. We asked visitors for their favourite words (real or made up), what they made them feel and why.
Sam Winston then created works of art from the words. Sam creates sculpture, drawings and books that question our understanding of words and worked on the pieces every day creating a reflection of the voices at Hay.
To help guests with their contributions, inspiration was provided through word games, music and sound stations. Over 9,000 people visited the area and over 8,000 shared words that were important to them.
Here are some examples of favourite words people shared with us at Hay;
Real Words
Resplendence: It reminds me of uninterrupted sea and sky, stars and sunshine and space.
Gobbledygook: How nice to have a nonsensical word to explain our dissatisfaction with all of life’s jargon.
Hope: It means that the impossible is possible.
Liverpool: Because its home.
Made Up Words
Holiyear: Because when was a day enough?
Dabalodus: Animal that attacks humans by licking on the face or neck area, attacks happen when least expected.
Greige: Boring corporate colour, a mixture of beige and grey.
Pregret: Regretting something before you have done it.
