About Hay

Each summer in May and June, Hay-on-Wye, nestled in the staggering beauty of the Brecon Beacons on the Welsh border, plays host to a gathering of some of the world’s brightest and most renowned literary talents for the Guardian Hay Festival.

Started by Peter Florence in 1987, the festival was described by Bill Clinton in 2001 as "The Woodstock of the mind". Over recent years it has grown substantially, developing its roots in literature to include musical performances and film previews. A celebration of ideas, stories, literature and language, 2010 highlights included best-selling author Christopher Hitchens, Nobel Prize winner Nadine Gordimer, and comedians Jo Brand and Rob Brydon.

With over 85,000 visitors, 580 speakers and 477 mini events, The Guardian Hay Festival is a pivotal occasion in the calendar for the world of literature, literacy and language. Sky Arts will return in 2011 as Broadcast sponsor for the fourth year, broadcasting live from the festival.
